God's Anointed: Saul & David

by Standing On His Word

People seem to forget that not everyone is called and anointed by God, satan has a ministry too.

2 Corinthians 11: 13-15
For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

Then there are those that were definitely handpicked by God however they have turned their backs on Him and His Word. I know I sound like a broken record at this point because I continue to repeat myself. There are so-called Christians that love to push back against those that address sin within the church. The all too well misused scripture of "touch not my anointed" and Saul and David. "David didn't touch Saul because he was God's anointed." Let's look at Saul and David's history.

In the book of 1 Samuel chapter 8 we see that Israel now desires a king to reign over them. Although this thing displeased God, He obliged. He told the Prophet Samuel to anoint Saul as their king. In chapter 12 Samuel warned them about what would happen if they disobeyed God. Chapter 13 reveals that Saul was disobedient. This was his first warning.

1 Samuel 13:12-14
Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the Lord: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering. And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the Lord thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the Lord have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever. But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the Lord hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the Lord hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the Lord commanded thee.

Chapter 15 Saul is again disobedient. God had gave word for them to smite Amalek and destroy all that they have. Spare nothing, men, women, children, and animals. God sent word to Samuel. God repented making Saul king, He was sorry.

1 Samuel 15:10-23
Then came the word of the Lord unto Samuel, saying, It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the Lord all night. And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal. And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the Lord: I have performed the commandment of the Lord. And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear? And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed. Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the Lord hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on. And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the Lord anointed thee king over Israel? And the Lord sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the Lord, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the Lord? And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and have gone the way which the Lord sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in Gilgal. And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

Because of Saul's continued disobedience God has now rejected him. The other thing that people love to holler is that we should pray for them. You can pray 24/7 until you are blue in the face and it won't change a thing. Why, because they have already been rejected by God. God knows they will not change. Certainly I know what Galatians 6 says about restoring those overtaken by a fault. Yet there is a difference in continued sin/ refusal to repent and those that actually admit they messed up. God can still use them because they humbled themselves and repented. Samuel mourned for Saul but in chapter 16:1 God asked Samuel how long will you mourn for Saul? I have already chosen someone else.

1 Samuel 16: 13-14
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.

Verse 14 says that God's spirit departed from Saul. Meaning that God was no longer with him. He was no longer God's anointed. Yeah I know they have this once saved always saved nonsense which is a lie from the pits of hell. If you continue to walk in sin and disobey God's word, God's spirit will leave you. " Well that's the Old Testament". Ok, well let's go to the New Testament.

Hebrews 10 26-31
For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

David found favor in the house of Saul, therefore Saul became enraged with jealousy. He knew God was now with David, so he wanted to kill him. David didn't have to kill him, although he had multiple occasions to do so. Why, because the judgement of God had already been rendered. The judgement was set. David still revered Saul as God's anointed. Yet David knew that he didn't have to lay a finger on him.

1 Samuel 26:10
David said furthermore, As the Lord liveth, the Lord shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish.

What I don't understand is why people use this scenario as a comparison. Saul was literally trying to kill David. David could have killed him but again he saw Saul as God's anointed therefor he wasn't going to kill him. However David also knew God would take care of it. People that address sin and call out those that are not trying to destroy them. They are doing exactly what God has called us to do.

2 Timothy 4:1-5
I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

I reiterate the point that God was no longer with Saul.

1 Samuel 28:6
And when Saul enquired of the Lord, the Lord answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

So he went to a witch that worked with familiar spirits to bring up the Prophet Samuel.

1 Samuel 28:15-19
And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do. Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the Lord is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy? And the Lord hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the Lord hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David: Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the Lord, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the Lord done this thing unto thee this day. Moreover the Lord will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me: the Lord also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.

For the third time God's judgement against Saul was rendered and set. Would you have told Samuel the same things that you tell God's prophets today? " Stop talking about God's anointed, pray for them, keep your mouth off of them. Who are you to judge? He who is without sin cast the first stone". Do you think Samuel would have bowed to man or continued to declare the Word of the Lord? I hate to break it to you but we don't get to chose and pick what it is that God gives us to speak. I'm just being honest there are times that I've wished I could. Even so we still have to obey God, whether people like it, accept it or not. There's more that I could address but for now I will leave you with a few more scriptures. As always I encourage you to study the Word of God for yourself. I promise that He will give you the wisdom and understanding that is needed.

Romans 16: 17-18

Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

1 John 4:1

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world

Remember that God loves you and so do I with the love of Christ.
